Available Position JAMSTEC is recruiting one position as a Project Researcher (Ⅱ) (AGS21-001)
Recruiting
Department
Ocean Data Synthesis Research Group, Global Ocean Observation Research Center (GOORC), Research Institute for Global Change (RIGC)
Job Description Ocean Synthesis Research Group, Global Ocean Observation Research Center, Research Institute for Global Change are collaborating on a project entitled "Enhanced Data stream Analysis (EDDA): Combining Rough Path Theory and Machine-Learning Algorithms" (FY 2020-2023, PI: Nozomi Sugiura) funded by a grant-in-aid to the AIP Network Laboratory under the "AI Research in Japan, Germany, and France" program.
We are seeking a researcher who works on this project.

[Research Description]
The EDDA project aims to develop statistical learning methods that can efficiently capture the features of sequential data. Specifically, we use the path signature, which plays a central role in rough path theory, to grasp sequential data in a novel manner, and to enhance machine-learning techniques for sequential data. We will examine the mathematical and physical appropriateness of our theory, develop machine-learning procedures, and demonstrate the effectiveness of our methods for the analysis of sequential data in earth sciences.
Although no prior knowledge of rough path theory is required, the appointee is expected to enhance his/her research through data-driven approaches utilizing the path signature. Collaborating actively with researchers in Japan, Germany, and France, the appointee will perform the following tasks:
(1) Promote collaborative research by discussing and understanding new theories for extracting the features of sequential data, and make concrete the knowledge as machine learning procedures.
(2) Through collaboration with experts in related fields, find effective applications to earth science data (e.g., climate time series and ocean observation profiles), and promote the practical use of the machine-learning techniques based on the theoretical work in (1).
(3) Prepare research reports and academic manuscripts.

[Relevant Research Fields]
Earth and environmental sciences including oceanography and meteorology. Mathematical and information sciences in general.
