Job Description Institute of Arctic Climate and Environment Research (IACE)(Director: Takashi Kikuchi), Research Institute for Global Change (RIGC) is soliciting applications for Scientists, Technical Scientists or Postdoctoral Researchers who will engage in research and development as follows:

[Research Description]
The successful applicants will perform research and development (R&D) to understand changes to the Arctic Ocean and its sea ice environment and/or to clarify the impacts on the heat/freshwater transfer and budget for the Arctic Ocean and global climate system and then publish the results. The applicants will carry out these R&D activities to quantify on-going environmental changes, identify processes that play an important role in Arctic environmental changes, and conduct accurate future prediction of the Arctic environment under international collaboration projects or frameworks.

The applicants may use any kind of research method, e.g., field observations, data analysis, and model simulation. We welcome applicants who have experience including fields of study beyond Arctic Ocean research. Applicants are not required to have prior knowledge of Arctic Ocean research topics. However, applicants are expected to understand the basics of sea ice and physical or chemical oceanography. We also expect an active researcher with a willingness to advance international collaborative research.

The assigned groups will be determined by the screening committee comprehensively.
Job Type Scientist: To contribute to the Agency, a Scientist is expected to perform world-leading research independently and share the results through scientific publications.

Technical Scientist: To contribute to the Agency, a Technical Scientist is expected to take a leading role in research, technology development, and technology innovation.

Postdoctoral Researcher: To contribute to the Agency, a Postdoctoral Researcher should be able to independently conduct the research subject under direction of a leader, and to be appointed to improve his/her research qualities.

*There may be a change in affiliation in the event of reorganization of the Agency.
*At the time of appointment, the Job Type will be determined in accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaws.
Requirements Scientist: The successful applicant must have completed a Ph.D. and have a strong enough record to be a scientist in a closely related research field.

Technical Scientist: The successful applicant must have completed a Ph.D. and have a strong enough record to be a technical scientist in a closely related research field.

Postdoctoral Researcher: Applicants are required to have been awarded or expect to have obtained a Ph.D. in a related field by the date of employment. In addition, no more than 5 years can have passed between the last day of the fiscal year in which the applicants obtained a Ph.D. and the date of employment.

*Appointment date is negotiable.
*In accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaws, on reaching the age of 65 during an employed fiscal year, the contract period will expire at the end of the same fiscal year. This bylaw may change.

Scientist/Technical Scientist:
Period of employment is from April 1, 2020 to March 31, 2025.
*One contract period is a maximum of five fiscal years. The contract period will not be renewed.
*After undergoing an evaluation during the period of employment, the contract may be modified to one without termination (termination of employment would be at the end of the fiscal year in which the employee reaches the age of 60, or the age of 65 if the employee is rehired after his/her retirement). For details on this system, please contact Human Resources Division.

Postdoctoral Researcher:
April 1, 2020 to March 31, 2021.
*One contract period is maximum one fiscal year.
*The contract period can be renewed but the total contract period is a maximum three fiscal years (until March 31, 2023).
*This position is a non-tenure-track, fixed-term employee position.
Salary Annual salary (paid in 1/12 equal monthly payments)

Scientist/Technical Scientist:
e.g., JPY 6,000,000
*Salary will be competitive in accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaw, based on the academic qualifications and demonstrated research skills of the applicant.
*There is no bonus or retirement allowance.

Postdoctoral Researcher:
JPY 5,250,000                                  
*There is no raise, bonus, or retirement allowance.
Terms of Employment (1) Upon appointment, the successful applicant will receive a relocation allowance in accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaws.
(2) An allowance for commuting expenses will be provided.
(3) The employee and JAMSTEC will share the premiums for social insurance and labor insurance in the proportion specified by the current statute.
(4) The JAMSTEC employee cooperative provides various subsidies for mutual aid and welfare services.
(5) A housing lease service is available in accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaws. In the case of Postdoctoral Researcher, a housing lease service is not available.
(6) Holidays and vacations: Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, year-end, and New Year holidays. Annual vacations with pay, special vacations, leave of absence to care for a family member, and maternity leave are provided.

g) 2 letters of recommendation from two senior research scientists (1 letter from each). The person providing the recommendation should email to JAMSTEC directly with a signed letter as an attached file in PDF format . Please include the applicant's name in the subject line. A letter of recommendation written by a JAMSTEC employee or a JAMSTEC visiting scientist will not be accepted.

(3) Interview and appointment
Applicants will be selected based on submitted application materials, followed by an interview. The successful applicant is expected to join us on April 1, 2020.

*A travel allowance is available for applicants from abroad, but only under certain circumstances.
