Job Description We invite applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher position as part of the project entitled “Improvement of the plant canopy radiative transfer model for GCOM-C land product development (April 1, 2019 to March 31, 2022) (Principal Investigator: Hideki Kobayashi)". This project is funded by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). The position will be based within the Arctic Geochemical Cycle Research Group, Institute of Arctic Climate and Environment Change Research (IACE), Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), where the research is to be conducted.

The Japanese Earth-observing satellite GCOM-C was launched in December 2017. The accuracy of ecosystem parameter estimation using GCOM-C relies on the accuracy of the radiative transfer calculation. The successful applicant will work on improving the visible to near-infrared plant canopy radiative transfer model in the following ways.

1. Investigate the factors that cause differences in reflectance between satellite and model simulation. Target areas include Japanese temperate forest, boreal forest, and potentially other ecosystems, including tropical forest.
2. Improve the radiative transfer code and ancillary data used in the model.
3. Develop numerical schemes to estimate large-scale ecosystem parameters.
Required skills include FORTRAN programming on Linux systems. Preferred experience includes Git, R, Python, QGIS, and Google Earth Engine.

Job Type Postdoctoral Researcher: To contribute to the project, a Postdoctoral Researcher should be able to independently conduct the research subject which is authorized by the Project under direction of a leader, and to be appointed to improve his/her research qualities.

*There may be a change in affiliation in the case of reorganization of the Agency.
Requirements Applicants are required to have been awarded or expect to have obtained a Ph.D. in a related field by the date of employment. In addition, no more than 5 years can have passed between the last day of the fiscal year in which the applicants obtained a Ph.D. and the date of employment.

*The contract period can be renewed but the contract period will be terminated on the end of March, 2022.

*Appointment date is negotiable.
*One contract period is a maximum of 1 fiscal year.
*The contract period will end at the conclusion of this funding.
*The contract period mentioned above will change according to budget of this project.
*In accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaws, on reaching the age of 65 during an employed fiscal year, the contract period will expire at the end of the same fiscal year. This bylaw may change.
*This position is a non-tenure-track, fixed-term employee position.
Salary Annual salary (paid in 1/12 equal monthly payments)
 JPY 5,250,000

*There is no raise, bonus and retirement allowance.
Terms of Employment (1) Upon appointment, the successful applicant will receive relocation allowances in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws.
(2) An allowance for commuting expenses will be provided.
(3) The employee and JAMSTEC will share the premiums for social insurance and labor insurance in the proportion specified by current statute.
(4) The JAMSTEC employee cooperative provides various subsidies for mutual aid and welfare services.
(5) Housing lease service is not available.
(6) Holidays and vacations: Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, year-end, and New Year's holidays. Annual vacations with pay, special vacations, leave of absence to care for a family member, and maternity leave are provided.

*If you have not been awarded any, include "none" in the list.
f) DOI codes of two (or fewer) representative publications. (1 copy)
*If DOI codes were not provided to publications, please submit copies of publications in PDF formats.
