Job Description We invite applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher to work primarily on a research project entitled "ArCS Ⅱ: Arctic Challenge for Sustainability Project Ⅱ (JFY2020-2024)", supported by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and TechnologyーJapan (MEXT). The successful applicant will engage in the ArCS Ⅱ ocean research program "Research and Public Dataset Production on the Arctic Marine Environment (P.I.: Eiji Watanabe)" of Strategic Goal 1 "Advanced Observation of Arctic Environmental Change".

Our understanding of ocean heat transport, marine ecosystem, and biogeochemical cycles in the Arctic remains insufficient to achieve sustainable utilization of the rapidly changing polar region. Therefore, this research program is being undertaken to clarify the Arctic marine environment through an Arctic cruise by the research vessel (R/V) Mirai, followed by numerical modeling of the sea ice–ocean system in sub-programs examining three aspects of the polar marine environment:
• Ocean heat/freshwater transport and biogeochemical cycles in seasonal and multi-year sea ice zones.
• Vulnerability and resilience of the marine ecosystem in response to rapid sea ice retreat.
• Air–sea interactions, including waves, related to sea ice.

The successful applicant will engage in appropriate research and development to help achieve these goals, including the following:
• Evaluation of the impact of riverine biogeochemical inflow on marine environmental variability (e.g., ocean acidification) via improvement of the pan-Arctic sea ice–ocean model for multi-decadal experiments.
• Model data production for the Arctic Data Archive System (ADS) and the Regional Carbon Cycle Assessment and Processes-2 project (RECCAP2) and evaluation of the uncertainties in air–sea CO2 exchange datasets provided by research institutes worldwide.
• Projection and visualization of potential future Arctic biogeochemical status scenarios until 2100, under the framework of Ice Algae Model Intercomparison Project phase 2 (IAMIP2).

Job Type Postdoctoral Researcher: To contribute to the project, a Postdoctoral Researcher should be able to independently conduct the research subject which is authorized by the Project under direction of a leader, and to be appointed to improve his/her research qualities.

*There may be a change in affiliation in the case of reorganization of the Agency.
Requirements Applicants are required to have been awarded or expect to have obtained a Ph.D. in a related field by the effective date of employment. In addition, no more than 5 years can have passed between the last day of the fiscal year in which the applicants obtained a Ph.D. and the effective date of employment. (i.e., applicants who earned a Ph.D. after April 2016 are eligible.)

Applicants are expected to have specific knowledge of or experience with numerical simulation using high-performance computers.

(4) Contract Period:
Total period will be terminated on March 31, 2024 after two contract renewals.
*First contract period is from October 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022.
*Effective date of employment is negotiable. However it might be changed due to the influence of COVID-19 expansion.
*Contract period can be renewed depending on the performance and working attitude of the successful applicant.
*Contract period might change due to budget constraints of the project.
*In accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws, on reaching the age of 65 during an employed fiscal year, the contract period will expire at the end of the same fiscal year. This bylaw may change.
*This position is a non-tenure-track, fixed-term employee position.
Salary Annual salary (paid in 1/12 equal monthly payments)
JPY 5,250,000
*There is no raise.
*Bonuses and retirement allowance are included in the annual salary.
Terms of Employment (1) Upon appointment, the successful applicant will receive relocation allowances in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws.
(2) Allowance for commuting expenses will be provided.
(3) Employee and JAMSTEC will share the premiums for social insurance and labor insurance in the proportion specified by current statute.
(4) JAMSTEC employee cooperative provides various subsidies for mutual aid and welfare services.
(5) Housing lease service is not available.
(6) Holidays and vacations: Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, year-end, and New Year's holidays. Annual vacations with pay, special vacations, leave of absence to care for a family member, and maternity leave are provided.

f) Two (or fewer) representative publications in PDF formats.
