[Coastal Environment Research Group, Mutsu Institute for Oceanography (MIO), Research Institute for Global Change (RIGC) Recruitment of Researcher (Ⅱ) AKS20-009]

Available Position JAMSTEC is recruiting one position as a Researcher (Ⅱ). (AKS20-009)
Coastal Environment Research Group, Mutsu Institute for Oceanography (MIO), Research Institute for Global Change (RIGC)
Job Description We are soliciting applications for a Scientist to engage in the following research and development.

The Coastal Environment Research Group, Mutsu Institute for Oceanography (MIO, Director: Takeo Tanaka), Research Institute for Global Change (RIGC), collects ocean observation data around the Tsugaru Strait, including quasi-real-time sea surface current data obtained by high-frequency (HF) radar, time-series sea surface temperature (SST) data, mooring-based current data, and hydrography data obtained by shipboard observation. The MIO is now constructing information service systems for regional socioeconomic activities (e.g., commercial fishing) and plans to acquire large amounts of ocean data from commercial fishing and/or pleasure boats to analyze the complex variations associated with coastal sea conditions.

The successful applicant will perform research and development to improve our understanding of marine environments. One aspect of this work will involve the investigation of changes in oceanic structure, based on coastal oceanographic analyses of big ocean data. This project will substantially contribute to improved accuracy regarding short- to long-term forecasts of sea conditions.

[Necessary requirements]
1) Research achievements in related fields, including leading papers in international journals.
2) Experience in ocean data analysis and visualization.
3) Sufficient Japanese language proficiency is required for cooperation with local fisheries personnel and dissemination of research findings to the local community.

[Desired skills]
1) Experience in ocean observation, especially mooring-based observation.
2) Experience in HF radar data analysis.
3) Knowledge of ecosystem ocean models applicable to prediction of fishery catches.
4) Perspective regarding social applications of research findings.
