FY2005 Earth Simulator Annual Meeting Presentation AbstractProject Leader: Dr. Eng. Keiko Takahashi
Title of your Project: Activities CIRA-ESC MoU about Meteorology
1. Purpose :
CIRA signed an agreement with the ESC/JAMSTEC to cooperate on hydrogeological (landslides, floods, etc.) and meteo local phenomena.
The main agreement topics are:
o Development of common research activities
o Training and exchanging of researchers
2. Research Schedule:
A first topic is about sensitivity studies with the high resolution (h.r. 5.5 km) non-hydrostatic atmospheric global model (Global Cloud Resolving Model - GCRM) developed at ESC. The sensitivity studies of the GCRM are performed for two intense precipitation events on the North-West Italian area of November 2002. In particular the pattern of the precipitations has been analysed and some improvements of numerical and physical parameterization will be proposed.
Another topic is related to an overview of the most important boundary conditions used in meteorological models because the study of nested techniques is one of the most demanding research activities in high resolution meteorological models.
Finally, the last topic is on a scalability analysis of the local version of the above model on the ES supercomputer, varying the number of processors and the domain size, in order to evaluate the computational performance of the code.
3. Attained Results by Using the Earth Simulator:
Computational, numerical and physical improvements of the Global Cloud Resolving Model developed by Multiscale Simulation Research Group at ESC on the European area
