Abstract

In this diagnostic study, the hypothesis that variations in SST/precipitation over the Indo-Pacific warm pool during Indian Ocean Dipole years provide additional push onto the zonal wind anomalies over the equatorial western Pacific and thereby influence the amplitude and phase transition of developing El Nino is examined. The hypothesis is tested with long integrations of a coupled model as well as during the observed El Nino in 2006.
