Japanese Coastal Ocean Predictability Experiment (JCOPE) System

Overview:
The JCOPE System predicts the state of the ocean surrounding Japan. It estimates Sea Surface Temperature (SST), Sea Surface Height (SSH), and other factors using satellite data and ocean models.


Instructions:
The following menu (1-6) is available on the main JCOPE page (http://www.jamstec.go.jp/frsgc/jcope/index.html). Each item provides links to specific information.

Offers current information and updates.

2. Description


Describes items such as system specifications and calculation details.

3. JCOPE Hindcast/Forecast

Displays results for the following four items -- on the date of the most recently available satellite data.

(1) Sea surface height
(2) Sea surface temperature
(3) Temperature at 200 m [color coded] & current direction [shown by arrows]
(4) Temp/current (u) N-S Section at 135 degrees E
(Cross-section of Kii Peninsula at 135 degrees E, south on left, north on right, and 
white areas represent land)

4. Sea-Surface Height Anomalies

Compares satellite data (left) and ocean model simulation (right) for sea surface height anomalies.

5. Sea-Surface Temperature

Compares satellite data (left) and ocean model simulation (right) for sea surface temperature.

6. Sub-Surface Temperature

Compares in-situ data (left) and ocean model simulation (right) for sub surface temperature at 200m depth.

Information displayed when "See details" is selected:
Clicking on different items (i.e. dates, “animationEand the images themselves) provides navigation through different datasets (see following).

(1) Date column (on left) 

Click on this column to display estimated results for selected data Colour code legend:

(Yellow): Shows the date of the displayed results.
(Pink):  Indicates results obtained using ocean models in conjunction with satellite data.
(Aqua): Indicates results obtained using ocean models without satellite data

(2) Animation button (next to figures)

Switches user to an animation screen.
The play button (located among the buttons at the bottom of the screen) animates the current image up to the last available frame.
(The animation will play in a continuous loop if the repeat box is checked.)

(3) Images for all calculated data are displayed in the Hindcast or Forecast columns

Switches user to "display area selection screen".
(Buttons for latitude/longitude range and zooming are available on the right. The selection scope is displayed near the centre of the image).

The user can specify a display range by entering the latitude/longitude range in the text box (near the illustrated compass points). Clicking “Zoom InEoffers enlarged views

The user can also set the display area by dragging the corner of the scope and can navigate by dragging the centre of the selection scope. The “Zoom InEbutton offers enlarged views.
