Appointment of Dr. Eitaro Wada as Director of
the Ecosystem Change Research Program

On 2 August 2004, Dr. Eitaro Wada was appointed as Director of the Ecosystem Change Research Program, of the Frontier Research Center for Global Change, a center under Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (an independent administrative institution).

After graduating from the Tokyo University of Education, Dr. Wada served various posts in different sectors including as a research fellow at Ocean Research Institute, University of Tokyo, a visiting researcher at Ocean Research Institute, University of Texas, Department Director of Mitsubishi Kagaku Institute of Life Science, and Director-General of Center for Ecological Research, Kyoto University. His latest position before joining FRCGC is a professor of Research Institute for Humanity and Nature, part of National Institute for Humanities (Inter-University Research Institute Corporation). Dr. Wada is expert in biogeochemistry and isotope ecology. Keeping his expertise, by utilizing his broad experiences and knowledge, he has conducted his research on various ecological fields in both marine and terrestrial environments. Recently, he has written a book "Geo-Ecology" (in Japanese). The book covers on various ecosystem responses to global environmental issues such as changes in ecosystem caused by global warming and its effects, including the decrease in biological diversity due to the anthropogenic activities.

The appointment of Dr. Wada should simulate research activity, not only in the Ecosystem Change Research Program, but also in the Frontier Research Center for Global Change as a whole.

Background

Frontier Research Center for Global Change (FRCGC) first started its research activities as Frontier Research System for Global Change (FRSGC) in October 1997 as a joint project of National Space Development Agency of Japan (NASDA) (the present Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)) and Japan Marine Science and Technology Center (the present Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology). Under Japanese Government's reform(reorganization), Japan Marine Science and Technology Center became the independent administrative institution and started its activity as Japan Marine Science and Technology Center (JAMSTEC), in April 2004. Through its reform, in July 2004, FRSGC became FRCGC, as one of the fours research institutions under new JAMSTEC.

Dr. Yoshifumi Yasuoka, a professor of Institute of Industrial Science, University of Tokyo served ad a Program Director of Ecosystem Change Research Program as an additional post since the program's establishment in Octover 1999. When Dr. Yasuoka resigned the position in March 2004, Dr. Taroh Matsuno, Director-General of FRCGC and Director of Global Environment Modeling Research Program, became the Director of the said program and led its research activities. Ecosystem Change Research Program consists of three research groups, namely Terrestrial Ecosystem Model Group, Ecosystem Spatial Observation and Modeling Group, and Marine Ecosystem Model Group. The program is addressing both terrestrial and oceanic ecosystems, and investigates the mechanism of interaction between ecosystems and climate and environmental changes such as global warming.
