The FRSGC hold "Symposium on Indo-Pacific
Climate (SIPC)"on March
6 - 7 at Shiba
Park Hotel,Tokyo,under the auspices
of Nippon
Foundation,STA,MSJ and OSJ.
The SIPC was the first international
meeting of this scale held under the theme
of Indo- Pacific climate. It was a magnificently
comprehensive set of talks, covering climate
variability in the Indo-Pacific region as
well as monsoon and southern ocean variability.Leading
scientists in this field from all over the
world got together in this meeting held in
Tokyo.
On March 6 ,the SIPC was
opened with
a large number of audiences to
hear the latest
progress made in this field.It
was obvious
that the Indian Ocean is receiving
increasing
attention.
Mr.T.Hirano,President of JAMSTEC, delivered
a welcome address.Then Dr.T.Matsuno,Director
General,FRSGC,gave an opening address.It
was followed by two keynote speeches;"Model
assessment of decadal variability and trends
in the Pacific Ocean"by Dr.S.Manabe,FRSGC,and
"Sustained observation of the Indian
Ocean: Application for research and socio-economic
benefits"by Dr.G.Meyers, CSIRO.Four
sessions followed;
First Session :Indian Ocean Climate
Second Session :Southern Ocean Variability
Third Session :Air-Sea Interaction in the
Western Pacific Ocean
Fourth Session :Monsoon Dynamics

The SIPC was co-chaired by Prof.T. Yamagata,FRSGC,Drs.G.Meyers,
CSIRO,Australia,P.Delecluse,LODYC, France,and
A.Navarra,IMGA- CNR, Italy/EU.Many scientists
from other countries also participate in
the SIPC- - - from China,India,Korea,UK and
USA.We had a number of speakers from institutes
and universities in Japan as well.
March 6 - 7 were really exciting two
days for all the participants. The SIPC not
only gave information on the research conducted
in each country but also helped scientists
to plan some more work in the area.It could
give a great deal of benefit to the participants
being able to talk with people who had a
specialty in their respective field.
