The SIOM workshop, jointly sponsored by the Minerals Management Service (MMS) /U.S. Department of the Interior, Coastal Marine Institute (CMI), International Arctic Research Center (IARC), and IARC-FRSGC was held successfully at the IARC, University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) during August 7-9.
At the opening remarks, the UAF Provost, Dr. Reichardt, gave a warm welcome speech to the group of more than 40 participants. Dr. Akasofu, Dr. Alexander, and Dr. Ikeda followed up to introduce IARC research activities and progress, CMI/School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences' research directions, and IARC-FRSGC research themes and international collaboration, respectively.
The MMS project manager, Dr. Prentki, then presented a research plan and perspectives for the next 5-10 years in the Beaufort and Chukchi Seas. The workshop had four research themes: 1) sea-ice mechanics modeling, 2) sea-ice dynamics, 3) smallscale and basin-scale coupled ice-ocean modeling, and 4) sea-ice/ ocean observation 32 presentations.
The workshop has produced better approaches and recommendations for small-scale iceocean modeling over the next 5-10 years, which will be valuable for the IARC-FRSGC modeling strategies. This workshop also promoted the collaboration between IARC-FRSGC scientists and the international community.
As one of the outputs of the workshop, a working plan for the smallscale ice-ocean modeling over the next 5-10 years has been produced.

IODP (Integrated Ocean Drilling Program) Program Preparation Office was founded within Planning & Promotion Department of AESTO on July 1. IODP is an international program which will be started from October 2003. Deep-sea drilling vessel named "Chikyu" which is now under construction by JAMSTEC, is one of the ships that will be used in this program.
IODP has three major research themes:
The main idea of the theme "The Processes and Effects of Environmental Change" is to deepen our understanding of environmental change which enables us to forecast the future of environment and the possible impact on life. The aim of the theme "Solid Earth Cycles and Geodynamics" is to study the seismogenic zone responsible for large destructive earthquakes. The third theme "The Deep Biosphere and Sub-seafloor Ocean" may help us to understand the secret of life evolution through probing deep Biosphere and Gas Hydrate in the Sub-seafloor.
IODP Program Preparation Office is engaging in arranging the establishment of the consortium of Japanese research institutions and supporting the founding of Central Management Office of IODP.
AESTO is going to engage in this new international project further on.
