On November 19th, 15 Swedish delegates consists
of policy makers, researchers and experts visited JAMSTEC Yokohama
Institute for Earth Sciences (YES). The delegation was headed by
H. E. Ambassador Bo Kjellen who has been serving as the chief negotiator
for Sweden towards the Kyoto agreement. They met with representative
from Japanese government, research institutes and companies in order
to discuss research and development strategies and projects in areas
crucial to achieving sustainable development. At Miyoshi Memorial
Hall of YES, representatives and researchers of YES, the Frontier
Research System for Global Change (FRSGC), the Frontier Observational
System for Global Change (FORSGC) and the Earth Simulator Center
(ESC) introduced our research activities to the Swedish delegates.
Besides the explanation of the whole Systems, they were particularly
interested in the research activities of Integrated Modeling Research
Program, Atmospheric Composition Research Program, and Ecosystem
Change Research Program of FRSGC. After the meeting, the delegation
visited the facilities of the Earth Simulator and moved to the next
visit. Although the schedule was very tight, we hope that the visit
will be a good opportunity for the first step toward a new partnership
with Sweden.
