Report of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Twenty-first Plenary Session and Working Group I-9th Session
Frontier Research System for Global Change (FRSGC), in order to actively contribute in IPCC Fourth Assessment Report (AR4), has been conducting research on climate change prediction to be presented as research papers in all programs.
IPCC convened its twenty first plenary session in Vienna, Austria from 3 to 7 November. 126 countries, 13 international organizations and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) for a total of 485 people participated in the session. Many ministries and agencies in Japan also attended it. From FRSGC, Dr. Tatsushi Tokioka, Director of the Global Warming Research Program (one of the lead authors of the First Assessment Report) and Dr. Hiroki Kondo, Research Supervisor of the Integrated Modeling Research Program (one of the Japan's representative of the Third Assessment Report) also joined in the session. Both of them currently make research activities to contribute to the AR4.
The plenary session was aimed to discuss outlines and guidelines of various reports, procedure for the election of a new IPCC bureau, work schedule and budget for AR4. During the session, each working group held working group session to discuss mainly outline of each working group report. The result was reported in the last day of the plenary session. As one of the key issue of the twenty first session, the pros and cons of preparation of the synthesis report were actively discussed. The synthesis report is the one for policy maker, integrates appropriate information from each working group report and shows FAQ style. This issue will be carefully examined its contents and the process, and decided in the next plenary session. The next session is scheduled to be held in October-November, 2004.
