Report of the FRSGC/FORSGC Symposium 2004
Seeking for the Knowledge on Extreme Weather
-Challenge for the Climate Change Prediction-
On 14th January 2004, in order to introduce our recent research activities for further understanding on climate change prediction, Frontier Research System for Global Change and Frontier Observational Research System for Global Change jointly organize the above symposium at the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation in Tokyo, Japan.
Dr. Mohri, Director of the Museum emphasized difficulties of the climate change prediction, and encourage us to further work on it. After Director Mohri's foreword, each presenter explained 1) elements to decide climate of Japan, 2) monsoon system, 3) role of the ocean to the climate, 4) atmospheric system respectively. There, system of the extreme weather events and effects of various climate systems on climate in Japan were introduced along with the resent research findings.
Then, the guest speaker Mr. Iwaya, weather caster of the Fuji Television's program "Super News Weekend", explained in detail the view points of media and weather forecaster about the climate change prediction. In his presentation, he insisted the timely and smooth information delivery of our research outputs to the public.
We hope that through this symposium, complexity of climate system and long-term weather prediction have been understood to the wide range of people. We shall carry out our activities to meet our goal, "towards the prediction of global change".
