The 10th session of the conference of the Parties (COP10) was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina in December 2004. We would like to introduce the latest trends on climate change research, and report of the FRCGC’s participation to COP10.

COP10 Receiving the Great Attention
COP10 marked the 10th anniversary of the entry into force
of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate
Change (UNFCCC). In addition, under the circumstances
where the "Kyoto Protocol" which has been on the shelf
because of unfulfilled conditions since its adaptation in 1997
will finally enter into force in February 2005 following its
ratification by Russia in November 2004, COP10 attracted the
highest attention among COPs held in this decade. There
were more than 6,000 participants from about 170 countries;
about 270 agencies/organizations related to the United
Nations, governments and NGOs, and about 240 media.
Governmental and Non-Governmental Organizations all
introduced their activities at exhibition booths in the
conference venue, and more than 100 side events were held
from morning to evening every day.

Participation in the Exhibition and the Side Event
In such a lively venue, FRCGC set up a large monitor in the
exhibition booth to introduce the model outputs of global
warming and ecosystem using the Earth Simulator, as well as
the "Global Chemical Weather Forecast System" which has
been on public thourgh our website. We explained about the
details of our research, the use of the results, Japan's policy on climate change study, in response to various questions
from the visitors.
Many people from governments, NGOs, corporations
and research institutes from all over the world, visited
our booth. Ms. Koike, the Environment Minister, Mr. Takano,
the Senior-vice Environment Minister, and Mr. Onodera,
Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs who were attending the
ministerial-level meeting
and Mr. Ohki, the former Environment Minister, who served as a chairman at COP3 in
1997, visited our exhibition booth.
The FRCGC’s Exhibition Booth
On 9th December, Thursday, the side event titled "Climate
Change Projection by the Earth Simulator and Related Research Outcomes" organized by the MEXT was held at the conference venue. The purpose of the event was to introduce Japan's efforts toward projection researches on global warming through the Project for Sustainable Coexistence of
Human, Nature, and the Earth, shortly called Kyousei Project,
by MEXT. Dr. Kondo, Senior Scientist of FRCGC, made a
presentation on three categories in Kyousei Project; "Highresolution coupled ocean-atmosphere modeling and global
