| On March 16th and 17th, the above symposium was held at Miyoshi Memorial
Auditorium in Yokohama Institute for Earth Sciences, JAMSTEC. The symposium is
organized jointly by FRCGC (Frontier Research Center for Global Change) and IORGC
(Institute of Observational Research for Global Change) at the end of the every fiscal
year. The purpose of the symposium is to develop people and information exchange
between two centers. This year, the symposium consisted of two parts to enhance
research cooperation between observation and future prediction. |

| On the first day, session Part I of the symposium started with an opening remark
by Dr. Tatsushi Tokioka, Director-General of FRCGC, then the research results were presented by six programs in FRCGC and
four programs and one project in IORGC. From our counterparts of international collaboration researches, Dr. Julian McCreary,
Director of IPRC (International Pacific Research Center, University of Hawaii, Manoa) and Dr. Syun-Ichi Akasofu, Director of IARC
(International Arctic Research Center, University of Alaska, Fairbanks) came to attend the symposium and made their
presentations. Throughout the day, there were bout 150 participants and they actively asked questions after every presentation.
Summaries of research results from each of the programs were presented on poster panels located outside the auditorium.
Researchers exchanged their opinions during the lunch time and breaks.
After all presentations, the first day was ended with the awarding ceremony of the FRCGC/IORGC Award in the fiscal year

In the morning of the second day, session Part II was held to discuss future visions. Dr. Eitaro Wada, Program Director of the
Ecosystem Change Research Program of FRCGC and Dr. Masao Fukasawa, Program Director of the Ocean General Circulation
Observational Research Program of IORGC organized the discussion as chairpersons. Various opinions regarding future
directions of two centers were exchanged, such as our specialties and goals in Earth System Science, and also positions in
JAMSTEC and Japan etc. Since Dr. Wada and Dr. Fukasawa are the members of the JAMSTEC Long-term Vision Committee,
they will summarize the discussion and incorporate it into the draft of JAMSTEC Long-term Vision.
Finally, Dr. Nobuo Suginohara, Director-General of IORGC closed the symposium which was held for one and half days with
his closing remark. |
