report

On August 4th, 2006, the Frontier Research Center for Global Change (FRCGC) and the Institute of Observational Research for Global Change (IORGC) jointly held the above symposium, the third in the series at U Thant Hall at the United Nations University (UNU) in Aoyama, Tokyo. In this series, which began in 2004, the latest research results on the influences of climate changes on our lives and the trends in research throughout the world are introduced. This year, the topic focused on water, which has a great impact to Japanese climate and life, and hydrological research by both FRCGC and IORGC were introduced. aaa
Dr. Tetsuzo Yasunari, PD and Mr. Tetsuya Muroyama, NHK commentator
Mr. Tetsuya Muroyama, NHK commentator, was invited again this year as the main host. He organized the symposium as a bridge between the audience and the speakers. Dr. Itaru Yasui, Vice Rector of the UNU, a coorganizer of the symposium, gave a talk titled, Water Defines the Risk of the Environment in the Future . U Thant Hall was almost full, with an attendance of about 350 people. We sincerely appreciate your participation in the hot and humid weather.

On August 28th, 2006, the Science and Technology Foundation of Japan (JSTF) hosted the 167th Easy Science and Technology Seminar at Miyoshi Memorial Auditorium on the Yokohama campus of the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC). Dr. Akihiko Ito, Sub Leader of the Ecosystem Change Research Program, gave a talk on Global Warming and Land Ecosystems - A Vision from the Model Simulations of Biology. There were 137 seminar participants. Dr. Akihiko Ito, Sub Leader

The seminar s target audience was the general public. Specialists in various fields of advanced technology gave lectures about their areas of expertise. JSTF offers research grants to support young scientists under the age of 35 who conduct original and developmental research.
The venue was almost full.

Dr. Ito was a JSTF grant recipient in fiscal 2005, which was one of the reasons why Dr. Ito was chosen as a seminar lecturer.Dr. Ito talked on the influences to ecosystems caused by changes of land ecosystems and global environment. He also discussed the process and results of his simulation research in which he used ecosystem models to predict future ecosystem change. He concluded his talk with the following message, It is important to consider the roles of ecosystems which are close to us, the future change of ecosystems, and the meaning of it. Dr. Ito received many questions after his talk.
The audience seemed to have a strong sense about the issues of global warming. At the end of the program, some participants chosen by lot had a chance to tour the Earth Simulator used in Dr. Ito s research, and also the Earth Science Museum. It is expected that the seminar and tour helped the participants understand the importance and usefulness of research activities in FRCGC and JAMSTEC.
