Results and Future Plan
Environmental factors are still on their way to become stable. Especially salinity data is different from that of before the big earthquake and tsunami. Benthic animals disappeared drastically just after the earthquake and followed by opportunistic polychaetes first and then occupied by 90% of polychaete species at the very beginning of the phase. Benthic density gradually increased forward, and not only polychaetes but crustacean species appeared secondary, bivalve species followed lastly. It seemed that the species which show planktotrophic larval development appeared first after the turbulence. We found a new record species from Japan on our way. We continue to survey the benthic community and environmental factors to understand their successions in tidal flats.
