Overview
The aim of this observation is to understand impacts on environments (sediment quality and benthos) by the tsunami in southern Sanriku coast. Specifically as follows. 1. Change of sediment quality in fisheries grounds 2. Ecological succession of benthic community in fisheries grounds 3. Monitoring of growth and survival of Japanese scallop as indicator of environments in fisheries grounds 4. Sellecting of suitable site for the farming of Japanese littleneck clam, Halocynthia roretzi and sea urchin

Results and Future Plan
Tsunami-deposited mud was confirmed in the whole area in Onagawa bay. However, mud content and COD (an index of the organic matter) decreased gently after 2012 or 2013. On the other hand, the PCB decreased to less than detection limit level after the tsunami was detected at same level before the tsunami in 2015 and the other chemical substances such as heavy metal were also similar. There is a possibility that sediment included chemical substances(which existed in range of 10-15cm in depth) supplied in the surface on the seafloor with some cause, because the chemical substances were prohibited to product or regulated on emissions. Though the environment seemed to change to unsuitable habitat for macrobenthos, abundance of the macrobenthos tends to increase after the tsunami and the species composition is returning to the previous composition of the tsunami. Abundance of macrobenthos increased from the previous level of the tsunami off Onagawa Bay, where the mud did not deposit as high as in the bay. However, species composition have changed and not returned to the previous composition of the tsunami. It is possible that the macrobenthic community off Onagawa Bay was affected for a longer time than that in the bay, though the deposition of mud was low off Onagawa Bay. We continue to investigate the recovery processes.
