Postdoctoral Researcher Position available at
the Institute for Research on Earth Evolution (IFREE) of
the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC)

Institute for Research on Earth Evolution (IFREE) of the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) invites qualified applicants for research at the Basic Research Program. IFREE promotes research on Earth dynamics including deep and shallow interactions and past history to present figures with the following two research programs involving about 100 research scientists and research assistants.

(1) Basic Research Program: This program aims to understand the dynamics and the evolution of the Earth system and interactions between its subsystems of interplanetary space, atmosphere, ocean, crust, mantle and core by using geophysical and geological observations, computer simulations, chemical analyses, high pressure/temperature experiments, and other laboratory experiments. JAMSTEC big facilities such as research vessels (with submersibles), the supercomputer "The Earth Simulator", the deep-sea drilling vessel "Chikyu", and the ocean- bottom observation network are fully utilized.
(2) Advanced Research Program: One final goal of IFREE is to comprehensively understand the Earth Evolution via multidisciplinary research. To achieve this the Advanced Research Program of IFREE is integrating and further developing the results of the Basic Research Program and conducting cutting-edge, comprehensive, and challenging projects.

IFREE is at present composed of 23 research teams, and the following research team of the Basic Research Programs is inviting applicants:

- Subseafloor Dynamics Research Team
Our research target is to understand the deformation processes caused by earthquakes or tsunamis, mass/heat migration in subseafloor hydrothermal or cold seep systems, and the evolution of oceanic lithosphere, through insitu, high-resolution and closely-spaced mapping of geophysical, geological and geochemical properties.

Research Director: Dr. Yoshio Fukao
Program Directors:
・ Basic Research Program;          Dr. Yozo Hamano
・ Advanced Research Program;   Dr. Yoshiyuki Tatsumi
