地球内部ダイナミクス領域（IFREE）では、地球の謎を解き明かすため、「プレート沈み込み帯変動研究」「海洋地殻・マントル進化研究」という2つの大テーマ を掲げ、世界の海を舞台に研究観測を行っています。」
- プレート沈み込み帯変動研究
- 南海トラフでは、100〜150年おきにマグニチュード（M）8クラスの巨大地震が発生し、大きな被害をもたらしてきました。前回は1944年の東南海地震と1946年の南海地震ですから、すでに60年以上たっています。
次の地震が迫る中、地震断層の形を調べる構造探査が行われ、また海底地震計による観測が行われています。そして「南海トラフ地震発生帯掘削計画」が2007年に開始されました。実験・観測・コンピュータモデルを駆使して、地震発生の過去と未来の姿を捉えることを目指しています。 - 海洋地殻・マントル進化研究
- 海洋地殻は海嶺で生まれます。海洋地殻を含む海洋プレートは海溝で沈み込み、マントルの底まで落下します。海洋プレートの一部は、マントル上昇流によって再び地表に運ばれリサイクルされていると考えられています。地球は46億年前の姿のままではなく、常に進化しているのです。海洋地殻やマントルがどのように進化してきたのか、また地球表層の環境との関わりを探ります。
