We will also visit summit and flank craters of three active volcanoes (Hokkaido-Komagatake, Usu and Tarumai) and investigate historic eruptive products (lava domes, debris avalanche, pyroclastic falls and flows and lahars) and crustal deformation. These volcanoes restarted their eruptive activities with large plinian eruptions in the 17th century, and have continued their eruptions intermittently until now. We will also focus on the 2000 Usu eruption in detail. Be prepared for some moderate hiking.

Departs from Karuizawa on Wednesday June 25 and arrives at Tokyo on Sunday June 29.

This field trip will focus on the big historical eruptions of two famous active volcanoes. At Asama, we will discuss the emplacement mechanisms of pyroclastic falls, flows and clastogenic lavas and products of the explosive eruption in 1783 A.D. At Fuji, we will visit the area of pyroclastic fall and its craters produced by the explosive flank eruption in 1707 A.D. and the lava flow field produced by the effusive eruption in 864 A.D.

A3 Unzen and Aso volcanoess --> CANCELLED
Leaders: S. Nakada (nakada@eri.u-tokyo.ac.jp), H. Hoshizumi, Y. Miyabuchi, Y. Sudo and H. Shimizu. Duration 5 days. Cost JPY80,000. Limited to 30 participants.
Departs from Fukuoka on Wednesday June 25 and returns to Fukuoka on the morning of Sunday June 29.

This field trip will focus on explosive and effusive eruption products generating a gigantic subsidence caldera and volcanic graben. The drilling site of the conduit for the latest eruption at Unzen and volcano observatories at Aso and Unzen will be visited.

A4 Sakurajima volcano and pyroclastic deposits in southern Kyushus --> CANCELLED
Leaders: T. Kobayashi (koba@sci.kagoshima-u.ac.jp), K. Ishihara and K. Suzuki-Kamata. Duration 4 days. Cost JPY58,000. Limited to 20 participants.
Departs from Kagoshima Airport on Thursday June 26 and returns to the same place on the morning of Sunday June 29. The accommodation for three nights is at the same hotel in Kagoshima City.

We will visit some Quaternary pyroclastic deposits and their source calderas. Depositional features of different scales of ignimbrites from Aira, Ata, and Ikeda calderas will be examined. We will also visit the active volcanoes Sakurajima and Kaimondake. Travel by bus with easy to moderate walks; temperatures up to 30°C. We may experience some heavy rain showers during the trip because of the rainy season.

A5 Active volcanoes in the Philippines - Mayon, Pinatubo and Taal
==STILL ACCEPTING THE APPLICATION RESERVE NOW!==
Leaders: E. Listanco, E. Corpuz, M. Lagmay and S. Catane (sgcatane@yahoo.com). Duration 6 days. Cost US$650 (excluding connection to Legaspi City, but including transfer flight from Legaspi-Manila). Limited to 20 participants.
Departs from Legaspi City Monday afternoon, June 23 and arrives at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Manila) Sunday morning, June 29.

Highlights ofthe field trip include the observation of the 2000-2001 deposits of Mayon Volcano; options to hike to the Pinatubo crater or a flight over Pinatubo volcano; and an overview of Taal Volcano and its caldera. We expect fantastic views, physically strenuous hiking in some places and potentially wet weather.

A6 Active faulting along the Median Tectonic Line --> CANCELLED
Leaders: A. Okada (okada@kugi.kyoto-u.ac.jp), H. Tsutsumi and H. Goto. Duration 4 days. Cost JPY65,000. Limited to 30 participants.
Departs from Matsuyama Thursday June 26 and arrives at Osaka (Itami) Airport on the afternoon of Sunday June 29.

This field trip will examine geologic expressions of the Median Tectonic Line, one of the most active faults onshore Japan. We will also visit a coseismic surface rupture site associated with the 1995 Kobe earthquake.
