From Project Leader

Magnitude 8 class earthquake occurred repeatedly with recurrence intervals of about 100-150 years along the Nankai trough. The latest of these were the 1944 Tonankai and 1946 Nankai earthquakes. The coastal cities in southwestern Japan were seriously damaged by the seismic shaking and tsunami. According to the Earthquake Research Committee, probability of occurrence of such great earthquake was estimated to be 60-70% in the region for the next 30 years. An ocean floor observatory is urgently needed to monitor anomalous crustal movement prior to earthquake and tsunami generation.
DONET also contributes mitigation of earthquake and tsunami disasters by rapid detection and data processing of seismic shaking and tsunami immediately after the earthquake.
