Using compressed air, this instrument can create an environment having air pressures between 0 ~ 5 kg/cm2. It is used diver training, emergency recompression for decompression sickness, and performance tests involving underwater equipment. The instrument consists of primary and secondary compartments. Operation of the primary room is independent of the secondary room. It is possible to enter the primary room through the secondary room while maintaining the pressure of the primary room. Valves inside and outside the rooms control compression and decompression. The instrument must be operated by technicians trained by the division. An oxygen unit is installed inside for emergency recompression for decompression sickness. This should be done only after proper consultation with a physician.
For safe operation, two small TV cameras are installed inside, and the inner compartments can be monitored from outside. In addition, the interior atmosphere is sampled and its carbon dioxide concentrations analyzed and monitored by an exterior gas environment analyzer. The external monitor and environmental gas analyzer may not be removed from the center's facilities for outside use.
