President Hirano's Speech
at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO)

JASMTEC President Mr. Takuya Hirano gave a speech "The Sea and The Japanese" at the 50th Anniversary of the LDEO held at the Low Memorial Library, Columbia University on Monday, 4 October 1999, with audience of roughly 140 people including the Columbia University Provost Dr. Jonathan Cole.

Mr. Hirano explained the close relationship between the sea and the Japanese people from the historical point of view and introduced JAMSTEC's activity policy, future research plans and the present situation of ocean science and technology.

He also talked about the importance of ocean research toward the 21st Century for clarifying the mysteries of earth's environmental balance, and he concluded the speech stating his hope for challenging to explore the sea and the earth, and dreams and issues of mankind together with world's research institutes.
