The Shinkai 6500 Systems

The Shinkai 6500 will play an important role in the world's deep sea research and resources development : Geophysics, geology, earthquake prediction, and ocean floor resources surveys.

Shinkai 6500

General description of the total system and its capabilities:

The Shinkai 6500 system, which fully reflects the experience of building and operating the Shinkai 2000 system, is capable of surveying about 96% of Japan's 200 mile EEZs (Exclusive Economic Zones) and about 98% of the Oceans across the world.

The system consists of the manned submersible Shinkai 6500, its support vessel Yokosuka, and a dive support system for navigation and telecommunications using acoustics and electronics. The system represents state-of-the-art technologies in materials, shipbuilding, mechanical engineering, and electronics.

On August 11, 1989, the submersible succeeded in a test dive to a depth of 6,527m in the Japan Trench off Sanriku, the greatest depth attained by any manned submersible currently in service.
