NSF director, Dr. Arden L. Bement, Jr. visited the Kochi Core Center
[ October 8, 2008 ]

Dr. Arden L. Bement, Jr. [Director, National Science Foundation (NSF), U.S.A] and Dr. Machi F. Dilworth (Office Head, NSF Tokyo Regional Office) visited the Kochi Core Center on October 8, 2008.

After meeting with Dr. Kiyoshi Suehiro (Executive Director, JAMSTEC) and Prof. Yusuke Sagara (President, Kochi University), they first viewed the core repository and had a lecture about the KCC as one of the 3 IODP core repositories in the world by Dr. Lallan Gupta, IODP curator. Dr. Bement was impressed with the neatly, safely and efficiently stored cores at the KCC, and showed interest in how the cores can help in understanding the global climate change through the changes in relative motion of Earth & Sun, and how the cores record distinct sign of mass extinction of life specially around the K/T boundary.

After visiting the core repository, Dr. Bement viewed the Microbiology laboratory and discussed about biosphere in the seafloor with Dr. Fumio Inagaki. Dr. Bement was impressed with a detection method of microbial cells from the deep seafloor and comented that this is the edge of science!

Dr. Bement's visit to the KCC gave us an opportunity to present our research activities and also other activities such as IODP core curation.
