In the area of 0 to 10,000 in X axis, the fluid model is performed. And in the area of 10,000 to 15,000, the particle model is performed. Then both models are self-consistently connected. We can see the physics in the extended area with the detailed physics around the shock transition layer.

Macro-Micro Interlocked Simulation of Cloud Formation

We have developed a novel, particle based, probabilistic simulation model of cloud microphysics named the Super-Droplet Method (SDM). SDM enables accurate simulation of cloud microphysics, such as the condensation and evaporation of cloud particles, the coalescence of cloud particles, and the sedimentation of precipitation particles with less demanding cost in computation. The new model could be useful for weather forecasts, the optimization of artificial rain, and improving the scientific understanding of climate change.
The figure is a schematic overview of the coupled simulation in which seasonal rain fronts calculated by AFES (Atmosphere for Earth Simulator) is sampled for regional calculations. The Super-Droplet Method would be used in the regional model.

It is an important research subject to quantitatively evaluate the production rate of atmospheric aerosols because atmospheric aerosols, which act as cloud condensation nuclei, significantly affect the Earth's climate. However, we cannot still directly observe the nucleation process of atmospheric aerosols occurring at the nanometer scale. The holistic simulation research program is trying to quantitatively understand the nucleation process of aerosols using a combination of ab initio quantum calculations and classical molecular dynamics simulations.

Macro-Micro Interlocked Simulation of Explosive Plasma Phenomena in Space and the Solar Corona

Explosive energy liberation, known as solar flares, occurs in the solar corona filled with high-temperature plasma. Shock waves and high-energy particles emitted from the explosion may damage long distant power transmission systems and spacecraft around the Earth and, sometimes, endanger astronauts in space. In order to forecast solar flares and the effect on the Earth, we are developing interlocked plasma simulations to reveal both large-scale plasma dynamics and small-scale plasma kinetics in the flaring region as well as in the inside of shocks.

Advancement in our
understanding of the space environment is in great demand now as the
dynamic activities of the Sun, solar wind, magnetosphere and ionosphere
can influence modern technology systems and endanger human life and
health. The numerical simulation and modeling driven by integrated
observations are powerful methods for understanding the complex
Sun-Earth system, and they are an important means for predicting space
weather. To address this issue, a workshop on "CAWSES International Workshop on Space Weather Modeling (CSWM)" will be held at the Earth Simulator Center
in Yokohama, Japan. This workshop will provide a forum for review of
