Holistic Simulation of Auroral Arc Formation

A holistic simulation of the aurora formation process has been developed by connecting a magnetohydrodynamic model with a microscopic particle model. The simulation can handle consistently both the macroscopic dynamics in the magnetospheric region and electron acceleration on the ionosphere-magnetosphere boundary.

The solar wind interacts with the geomagnetic field resulting in the formation of the magnetosphere, which is roughly balanced between the solar wind pressure and the geomagnetic pressure whereby twin vortices are formed basically in the magnetospheric equatorial plane.

Downward electrons are strongly energized to produce excitation of oxygen and nitrogen molecules at the ionosphere. The ionospheric density is also strongly modulated by the local enhancement of ionization, which in turn changes the evolution of the magnetosphere-ionosphere current system.
