Research Topics

Granular materials

Granular materials are ubiquitous in nature and technology. Nevertheless, no macroscopic equation for granular materials is known. The discrete element method (DEM) has been widely used to simulate complex behavior of granular materials without constitutive laws. In the last years, it has become increasingly clear that the dynamics (competition between rolling and sliding) of non-spherical granular materials is governed essentially by the deviations of the particle shape from ideal spheres, i.e. by the roughness and by the elongation. Up to now, among most of the simulations for round particles, a few DEM code modeled the particles with polyhedral shape while the contact force by the penetration depth which essentially is the same as for round particles. With the polyhedral DEM code, a larger phenomenology is (hopefully) accessible than either with round particles or with penetration-depth based force models.

Soil liquefaction

Liquefaction is a phenomenon that soil suffers a considerable lost of its shear strength caused by earthquakes. It has brought disastrous consequences such as ground failures and infrastructure damages in the past. Conventional assessment techniques tend to overestimate the liquefaction risk. To achieve more effective liquefaction hazard assessment, we adopt an automatic assessment approach based on soil dynamics analysis, which are suitable for efficient urban-wide assessment taking the advantage of HPC.
