Description
This is a program to convert a geomagnetic field model to KML. By using this program, you can display geomagnetic field on Google Earth as follows.
-
geomagnetic field at any depth/height
-
local geomagnetic field
-
geomagnetic field displayed in the sky
Instructions
The next only three steps are needed to generate a KML file.
- Select geomagnetic field model.
- Select date and height (or depth) of the geomagnetic field you want to visualize.
- Select a component of the geomagnetic field.
The generator calculates the geomagnetic field from spherical harmonic coefficients. You can select the range of coefficient. The geomagnetic field at geomagnetic observatories and metropolises will also be calculated and displayed on Google Earth by vectors.
Available models
Available geomagnetic field models are as follows.
| IGRF10 (International Geomagnetic Reference Field) | this is expanded from spherical harmonic degree 1 to 13 |
|---|---|
| NGDC-720 (Crustal geomagnetic field model provided by Natinal Geophysical Data Center) | this is expanded from spherical harmonic degree 16 to 720 |
| POMME-4 (Potsdam Magnetic Model of the Earth provided by Deutsches GeoForschungsZentrum) | this is expanded from spherical harmonic degree 1 to 720 |
Download samples
The size of these files are large, so it may take a few minutes to display them on GE.
-
The total intensity of geomagnetic main field at the Earth's surface on Christmas day in 2008 (IGRF10)
-
The total intensity of the crustal magnetic field around Japan (NGDC-720)
-
The total intensity of geomagnetic main field at an altitude of 3,000 km above Japan islands (IGRF10)
