(1) Climate system and satellite-sensed vegetation

By satellite remote sensing, global vegetation has been monitored in these 20 years. The vegetation information called by Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) has great potential to analyze the vegetation over wide area for a long time period. My research theme is to investigate relationship between the climate and vegetation, which is revealed by NDVI, at continental scale over northern Eurasia. Especially, the vegetation phenology and interannual change are targeted in relation to the climate change. Recently, a new research theme on the forest above-ground biomass estimation by ALOS/PALSAR was started.

(2) Land surface and atmospheric boundary layer climate

The climate in the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) is strongly affected by the land surface condition. For instance, the energy and water balance between the land surface and atmosphere is dominated by the land surface condition. Local wind circulations like land/sea breeze is induced by the regional contrast of land (or sea) surface characteristics. I employ the satellite and airborne remote sensing measurements, and investigate the land surface and ABL climate over regional areas.
