The Pacific Plate is sinking beneath Hokkaido at a rate of 8 cm per year, heading west by northwest from the Chishima Trench.
Due to active diastrophism in line with such movement, there have been major earthquakes such as the 1952 Tokachi offshore earthquake, which occurred in offshore waters on the Pacific side of Hokkaido.
JAMSTEC built the integrated observation system in Kushiro-Tokachi offshore waters, and now is conducting highly accurate observation and research of earthquakes and Tsunami occurring in those waters.
The system is capable of conducting long-term, continuous and real-time observation of earthquakes, Tsunami and other phenomena of seafloor change.
