Progress in Research on Deep-Sea Extremophiles

Program director TAKAMI, Hideto

Genome biology is rapidly expanding and steadily becoming established as biology for new century. Beginning in 1996, along with the gradually mounting need for genome biology in Japan, we initiated the genome sequencing project of extremophiles such as for understanding biodiversity and environmental adaptability alkaliphilic Bacillus halodurans, alkaliphilic and extremely halotolerant Oceanobacillus iheyensis and thermophilic Geobacillus kaustophilus. We are currently promoting bioinformation analysis through comparative genome analysis of these microorganisms. Besides findings that are important in considering the evolution of microorganisms and diversification to adaptation to various environment, we are also obtaining large volumes of data necessary for identifying useful substances and improving production.fig1 Gnomics physiology Bioengineering Physics physics
