Current Situations and Future Outlook of Deep Seawater Utilization

Deep seawater is excellently valuable as resources, such as being euthropic, cold, clean or the like. Its applications in the field of life production and energy recovery have been being studied. As a result, the deep seawater has been proven effective in the fishery field of culturing seaweeds and rearing cold-water and/or deep-sea animals and in the coldness utilizing field, such as cooling, dechrolination, water temperature control. From a regional promotion point of view, moreover, some products have been developed (liquor, salt, Tofu, etc.) and some of them have already entered in their practically usable stages. And such uses have been far reaching many local governments, such as Kochi Prefecture, Toyama Prefecture, Okinawa Prefecture and so on.
At present, the deep seawater utilization technology has been transferring from its demonstration levels to practical use stages. To achieve a substantial practical use of the deep seawater from now on, there are some challenges for a development, such as scientific clarification of deep seawater resources, their effective utilization techniques, deep seawater intake and discharge or the like.
