Public Open of "KAIREI"and "KAIKO 7000" in Kamaishi City

The Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (hereafter JAMSTEC: Mr. Yasuhiro Kato, President) is pleased to announce that the Deep Sea Research Vessel "KAIREI" and the Remotely Operated Vehicle "KAIKO 7000" are going to be open for public at the public wharf in Kamaishi Port. This event will be held as part of the Kamaishi City´s commemoration of accomplishment of 3 biggest public works and the 70th anniversary for municipality.

Public seminar will be also held the day before, titled "Observe Japan Trench from Submersible ~Trace of the giant earthquake, Calyptogena, and the others~" at Kamaishi City Community Hall.

1.Date and time : June 9 (Sat.), 2007 10:00~16:00 (End of registration 15:30)
2.Venue : Public wharf at Kamaishi Port
(Minato-machi, Kamaishi City, Iwate Prefecture) see map (in Japanese)
*Parking spaces available.
3.Facility : The Deep Sea Research Vessel " KAIREI " (about KAIREI) and the 7,000m class Remotely Operated Vehicle " KAIKO 7000 " (about KAIKO)
4.Admission : Free.No pre-registration required
5.Host : The Executive for Commemoration of 2007 Big Events in Kamaishi
Co-host : JAMSTEC
6.Others : 1) The event may be cancelled due to the bad weather or other factors.
2) For safety reasons, people who are wearing high-heels or sandals, under the influence of alcohol are not allowed, since the floors are not even and slippery inside of the ship.
3) Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

Title: "Observe Japan Trench from Submersible ~Trace of the giant earthquake, Calyptogena, and the petit spot science~"
Lecturer: Kantaro Fujioka (Doctor of Science)
Marine-Earth Data and Information Department (MEDID), JAMSTEC
Explain the subduction of Pacific plate under the Japan Trench off Sanriku, which is the cause of the past two giant earthquakes and tsunami in this area. And explain the importance of study of the discovered huge rift indicating past earthquake and chemosythetic life community at the seafloor. In addition, the world’s most advanced research technologies will be introduced.
