2010 Symposium of the Innovative Program of Climate Change Projection for the 21st Century
"Living in the Era of Drastic Climate Change: Long-term Projection to Guide our Planet"

The Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology will be hosting the public symposium as follows on the Innovative Program of Climate Change Projection for the 21st Century (dubbed as the KAKUSHIN Program)(*) , which was launched by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) in 2007. The program is designed to foster a better public understanding of the importance and value of research activities in climate change projection.

The symposium this year will focus on “Long-term Global Change Projection,” one of the main studies undertaken by the KAKUSHIN Program and of growing social concern. The primary objective of this study is to provide the latest scientific findings indispensable for discussing strategy options on how to address mitigation and adaptation policies against global warming.

As society is much more aware of global warming threats and as measures against them have become major issues facing international politics, the global warming projection research has been assuming a more substantial role of providing information on concrete and specific measures to be taken to meet international and domestic needs, rather than simply supplying scientific findings to warn the public. The symposium hopes to serve as an opportunity to raise awareness of the public, the ultimate decision maker for society, about the significance of science and the role of scientists in our society.

*Innovative Program of Climate Change Projection for the 21st Century (KAKUSHIN program) is a five-year project launched by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), spanning from FY2007 to FY2012. Exploiting the scientific results from the MEXT’s Kyosei Project (FY2002 - FY2006) and using JAMSTEC’s Earth Simulator to address emerging research challenges, the KAKUSHIN program aims to further contribute to the upcoming Fifth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) while providing a scientific basis for climate change measures.

The program consists of three main themes:

  • Advancing climate modeling and projection
  • Quantification and reduction of uncertainty
  • Application of regional projections to natural disasters
