Public Open Day for R/V MIRAI and Mutsu Institute for Oceanography

JAMSTEC is pleased to announce an open house of the Oceanographic Research Vessel "MIRAI" and the facility of Mutsu Institute for Oceanography (MIO) on August 6, 2011.
The annual open day is designed to enhance the public understanding of research at MIO, by offering visitors a variety of hands-on activities to explore wonders of the ocean.

<Open House Details>

1. Date and time : Saturday, August 6, 2011, 10:00~16:00 (Last admission 15:30)
2. Venue : Mutsu Institute for Oceanography (MIO), JAMSTEC
690 Kita-Sekine, Sekine, Mutsu City, Aomori Prefecture
(approx. 20 minutes by car from Shimokita Station, JR Oominato Line)
*Free shuttle buses are available from Mutsu City (see the leaflet (in Japanese) )
3. Admission : Free
4. Open house features  :
 
1) Oceanographic Research Vessel "MIRAI"
2) Poster presentation by MIO researchers
Topic: North Pacific Time-series Observation Research
3) Science experiments for children – "How to make seawater batteries?", etc.
4) "Touching pool" - Let's touch some fish from the Tsugaru Strait!-
5) Stamp rally
6) Complimentary personalized calendar featuring a photo of each visitor taken in front of the MIRAI (for the first 500 visitors)
7) Exhibit of Triton Buoy and Argo Float. Fun games will also be played.
8) "Ebi gechu (Shrimp catch)" - catch zoo plankton in the aquarium and culture it at home -
9) Panel exhibit including;
- JAMSTEC's contribution to disaster relief operations following the Great East Japan Earthquake
- The research collaboration between Aomori Prefectural Industrial Technology Research Center and MIO
