Code of Conduct for Research Activities

The Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (hereafter referred to as "JAMSTEC") has been established, based on the principle of peace and welfare, to advance marine science and technology, and to contribute to enhancing academic research through comprehensively conducting fundamental research and development and cooperating with academic research in the oceans. (Article 4 of the Law concerning Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology)

With this in mind, engaged in research activities at JAMSTEC in the belief that discovering new truths, we have the responsibility to contribute to welfare of humankind, public security and sustainable global environment through our knowledge and skills.

Needless to say, research activities shall be conducted based on each researcher’s integrity and self-discipline, and no dishonesty in any research activity shall be tolerated. In the modern world of high impact science activities and its results, researchers should act on the ethical judgment at any time.

Recognizing the above, the "Code of Conduct for Research Activities" is instituted to establish the ethic of self-discipline.

1. We engage in research activities to fulfill our social responsibilities with integrity, objectivity and transparency at any time.
2. We strongly recognize that the funds related to our research activities are granted by the trust with responsibility to society. We shall apply, manage and execute the funds properly.
3. In case when an improper conduct such as fabrication, falsification, plagiarism or unauthorized use of research fund of a person who is engaged in research activities is discovered, we do not tolerate such a conduct and handle it appropriately based on the rules for JAMSTEC employees.
4. Each head of research division follows the guidelines of JAMSTEC, makes efforts to establish an environment in which researchers can continuously maintain and improve their faithful research activities and communicates effectively with researchers to prevent such improper conduct.
