Innovation Promotion Office via Marine-Earth Science and Technology inaugurated

July 16, 2015

The Innovation Promotion Office via Marine-Earth Science and Technology was inaugurated on July 1, 2015. The Office led by President Asahiko Taira is dedicated to promoting innovation in marine science and technology, and maximizing research and development results.

Japan’s “Comprehensive Strategy on Science, Technology and Innovation 2015” was approved by the Cabinet on June 19, 2015. The Strategy specifies that, for the promotion of innovation, it is critical for universities, companies, public research institutions and other organizations and their personnel to “interact with one another” while fulfilling their own roles. In this context, national research and development agencies are expected to stimulate the “interaction”, and take the leadership in developing mechanisms to promote innovation and providing opportunities to exchange ideas.

As one of the national research and development agencies, JAMSTEC is determined to pursue agency-wide and cross-sectoral efforts. Such efforts include enhancing the use of accumulated various research findings and technological development results as well as vessels and other structures owned and/or operated by JAMSTEC, and creating and strengthening the roles of an innovation hub and functioning as a practical forum to promote the exchange of ideas about marine science and technology.
