"Ocean and Biodiversity" Event held at JAMSTEC Tokyo Office

July 25, 2019

On June 27, 2019, JAMSTEC and the Science and Technology Section of the French Embassy in Japan co-organized an event "Ocean and Biodiversity" at the Tokyo office of JAMSTEC.

Ms Frédérique Vidal, Minister for Higher Education, Research and Innovation, accompanying the President of the French Republic on an official trip to Japan, chaired this event with the President of JAMSTEC, Dr Asahiko Taira in the presence of representatives of French research institutes (CNRS, CEA, CNES, ANR, IFREMER, INRA) and Japanese institutes (JAMSTEC, University of Tsukuba, FRA, NIES, etc.). The exchanges focused on ocean related topics (observation of marine biodiversity, micro-plastics, deep seabed and mantle study) and also on France-Japan cooperation in the field of ocean sciences.

At the France-Japan bilateral summit, the leaders of both nations had a consensus to build a concrete cooperation through France-Japan Maritime Dialogue, and this cooperation was placed in the framework of the Dialogue.

Minister Vidal describes the importance of concretizing France-Japan cooperation in the field of the ocean, in particular around three pillars [1] Blue Economy, [2] Climate Change, Environment, Biodiversity and [3] High Quality Infrastructure. She also mentioned her expectations for the Japan France workshop on oceans, planned in September 2019, in Noumea in New Caledonia.
