Job Description The Climate Variability Prediction and Application Research Group, Application Laboratory (APL), Research Institute for Value-Added-Information Generation (VAiG), Japan Agency for Marine Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), is soliciting applications for a Research Assistant to participate in a project titled “Roles of the Kuroshio and Oyashio frontal zones in the air-sea interaction systems and predictability of their interannual variability (JFY2019-JFY2023, Principal Investigator: Masami Nonaka)”. The project is funded by MEXT through a Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Innovative Areas; the title is “Mid-latitude ocean-atmosphere interaction hotspots under the changing climate.”
The successful candidate will support research on the following topics:
(1) The mechanisms and predictabilities of interannual variability in the Kuroshio and Oyashio Extensions, and associated eddy activities;
(2) The effects of mid-latitude ocean-atmosphere interactions on the spatiotemporal variabilities of salinity;
(3) Atmospheric responses to changes in the Kuroshio and Oyashio Extensions, and the associated eddy activities;
(4)Duties necessary to promote above operations.

Job Type Research Assistant (Class 4):
To support the research conducted during the program, the Research Assistant is expected to participate in work requiring greater applied high-level knowledge and skills. The successful candidate will also be expected to propose specific measures contributing to the project.
Requirements Applicants must have a master's degree in a related field or equivalent levels of expertise.

Applicants should possess the following:
(1)Experience in analyses of spatiotemporal data (e.g., oceanographic and climate data).
(2)In addition, experience with ocean circulation models and data assimilation systems would be well-regarded.

Working Conditions & Contract Period (1) Number of positions:
1 position for a Research Assistant

(2) Type of contract:
Fixed-term employee

(3) Working Hours:
9:00-17:30 (Lunch hours 12:15-13:00)

(4) Contract Period:
Total period will be terminated on March 31, 2024.
*The contract period will not be renewed.

*Effective date of employment is negotiable.
*This position is a non-tenure-track, fixed-term employee position.
Salary Hourly pay rate JPY 2,750

*Overtime payment will be added to monthly salary.
*There is no bonus and retirement allowance.
Terms of Employment (1) Allowance for commuting expenses will be provided in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws.
(2) Social insurance (Health insurance, Employee's pension insurance, Corporate pension fund, Employment insurance and Industrial Accident Compensation Insurance) will be provided, depending on the working conditions and contract period.
(3) The JAMSTEC employee cooperative provides various subsidies for mutual aid and welfare services.
(4) Housing lease service is not available.
(5) Holidays and vacations: Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, year-end, and New Year's holidays. Annual vacations with pay, special vacations, leave of absence to care for a family member, and maternity leave are provided.
