Marine Plastics Research Group, Marine Biodiversity and Environmental Assessment Research Center (BioEnv), Research Institute for Global Change (RIGC)
Job Description Marine Plastics Research Group, Marine Biodiversity and Environmental Assessment Research Center (BioEnv) (Director: Katsunori Fujikura), Research Institute for Global Change (RIGC) is recruiting applications for two tenure-track research positions focused on marine plastics.
Our group works to understand the extent of marine plastic pollution from the sea surface to the deep sea and assesses marine ecosystem impacts using multiple approaches: shipboard observation, laboratory experiments, and innovative sampling and measurement systems. We also collaborate with multiple sectors to develop research.

Successful applicants will collaborate with our team to develop new microplastic measurement and analysis methods, investigate the impact of marine plastics on marine species/ecosystems, and study the distribution and dynamics of microplastics through onboard observation and collaboration with the Ships of Opportunity Program. Given the multidisciplinary, multi-sector nature of marine plastics science, successful applicants must be aware of the current socioeconomic aspects related to marine environments and must be willing to work with international colleagues to tackle marine plastic pollution, an urgent global issue.

Researchers are expected to contribute to the following projects:
(1) New technologies/methods for microplastic analysis/measurement
(2) Impact of marine plastics on marine species/ecosystems
(3) Distribution and dynamics of microplastics through multi-sectoral collaboration
(4) Socioeconomic aspects of marine plastic pollution from the research results gained from the above projects, (1)-(3)
