Job Description The Supercomputer Engineering and Administration Group, Center for Earth Information Science and Technology (CEIST) (Director: Yoichi Ishikawa) of the Research Institute for Value-Added Information Generation (VAiG), Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), is soliciting applications for an Engineer (II), Engineer, or Senior Engineer (II) who will be expected to contribute to management of the large JAMSTEC computer system and the associated peripherals.

The Group is responsible for system management of large-scale high-performance computers, including the JAMSTEC supercomputer (the “Earth Simulator”) and related systems. We offer technical support to users of such systems. We provide computational resources to a wide range of researchers and engineers. 1) Operation of the large JAMSTEC computer and associated peripherals
2) Provision of technical support to computer users
3) Application of upgrades and enhancements
4) Promotion of the uses of the system

We especially welcome applications from engineers interested in cooperating with JAMSTEC researchers, or who build computer environments using virtualization technology.

Engineer:
Engineering job is expected to improve and develop fundamental and comprehensive technologies related to the business operations of JAMSTEC, as well as maintain, update, plan, and promote such advanced technologies.

[Position]
Engineer(II):
Engineer (II) is expected to understand the goals and objectives of their work, to perform duties as an expert in technology-related work, and to serve as a core member of the assigned department.

Engineer:
Engineer is expected to understand the goals and objectives of their work, to perform duties as an expert in technology-related work, and to serve as a core member of the assigned department.

Senior Engineer(II):
Senior Engineer(II) is expected to fully understand the social responsibility of JAMSTEC at all times, to perform duties as a main engineer, and to serve as a core member of the assigned department based on their advanced, extensive knowledge and experience.

*At the time of appointment,the position will be determined in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws.
Requirements Applicants must have must have completed a bachelor degree in a closely related field of research or technology development, or possess equivalent development skills.

[Qualifications and experience]
・Experience in administration of a UNIX/Linux system (required for appointment as an Engineer or a Senior Engineer (II))
・Experience with UNIX/Linux
・Programming experience in Fortran or the C/C++/Python languages
・Processing experience with shell scripts such as sh/csh
・General communication and computer operation (Word, Excel, E-mail, etc.)

In addition to the above, the desirable experience, skills, and qualifications include:
・Experience with virtualization technology (such as virtual machine and container technology)
・Qualifications in computer networking and information security
・IT qualifications such as the LPIC and success in the Japan Information Technology Engineers Examination
・Experience in scientific computing, HPC, and parallel computing

Working Conditions & Contract Period (1) Number of positions:
1 position for an Engineer(II), Engineer, or Senior Engineer(II)

(2) Type of contract:
Tenure-track fixed-term employee

(3) Working Hours:
9:00-17:30 (Lunch hours 12:15-13:00)

(4) Contract Period:
Total period will be terminated on March 31, 2028 after a contract renewal.
First contract period is from April 1, 2023 to March 31, 2026.
*Contract period can be renewed depending on the performance and working attitude of the successful candidate.

*Effective date of employment is negotiable.
*In accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws, on reaching the age of 65 during an employed fiscal year, the contract period will expire at the end of the same fiscal year. This bylaw may change.
*After undergoing an evaluation during the period of employment, the contract may be modified to one without termination (termination of employment would be at the end of the fiscal year in which the employee reaches the age of 60, or the age of 65 if the employee is rehired after their retirement). Salary Annual salary (paid in 1/12 equal monthly payments)
e.g., JPY 5,500,000~9,500,000

*Overtime payment will be added to monthly salary.
*Salary will be competitive in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaw, based on the academic qualifications and demonstrated research skills of the candidate.
*Bonus and retirement allowance are included in the annual salary.
Terms of Employment (1) Upon appointment, the successful candidate will receive relocation allowances in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws.
(2) Allowance for commuting expenses will be provided.
(3) Employee and JAMSTEC will share the premiums for social insurance and labor insurance in the proportion specified by current statute.
(4) JAMSTEC employee cooperative provides various subsidies for mutual aid and welfare services.
(5) Housing lease service will be available in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws.
(6) Holidays and vacations: Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, year-end, and New Year's holidays. Annual vacations with pay, special vacations, leave of absence to care for a family member, and maternity leave are provided.
