Job Description The Climate Model Development and Application Group, Research Center for Environmental Modeling and Application (CEMA) is soliciting applications for a Project Research Technician to participate the program, "Advanced Research Program for Climate Change Prediction". This program aims to elucidate the mechanisms of climate change, reduce the uncertainty of climate change predictions by improving climate simulation models, improve the accuracy of climate prediction data, and utilize the data in a comprehensive manner. The goal of this program is to provide scientific evidence for the development of global climate change mitigation and adaptation plans. We are presently recruiting a Project Research Technician to participate in this program.

The successful candidate is expected to be skilled in the use of FORTRAN, UNIX shell script, and standard visualization software, and to carry out the following activities:
(1) Develop an initialization system for seasonal to multi-year climate change predictions using physical climate models and earth system models (ESMs) that implement a global carbon cycle based on the Atmosphere?Ocean General Circulation Model (AOGCM).
(2) Conduct climate simulations using an AOGCM and ESM.
(3) Manage experimental data, and maintain and operate servers and data storage facilities.

Project Research Technician:
Project Research Technician is expected to contribute to the promotion of research and development by accumulating expertise in observing devices and analytical instruments, etc. as a specialist in maintaining and operating basic technologies related to the organization’s research and development efforts.

*There may be a change in affiliation in the case of reorganization of the Agency.
Requirements The successful candidate must have completed a M.S. in a closely related field. Those who have equivalent ability with extensive experience are also acceptable.

*The successful candidate must be able to work with FORTRAN, various shell languages on UNIX systems, and visualization software.

(4) Contract Period:
Total period will be terminated on March 31, 2027 after four contract renewals.
*First contract period is from June 1, 2022 to March 31, 2023.
*Effective date of employment is negotiable. However it might be changed due to the influence of COVID-19 expansion.
*Contract period can be renewed depending on the performance and working attitude of the successful candidate.
*Contract period might change due to budget constraints of the research program.
*In accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws, on reaching the age of 65 during an employed fiscal year, the contract period will expire at the end of the same fiscal year. This bylaw may change.
*This position is a non-tenure-track, fixed-term employee position.
Salary Annual salary (paid in 1/12 equal monthly payments)
e.g., JPY 5,000,000-5,500,000

*Salary will be competitive in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaw, based on the academic qualifications and demonstrated research skills of the applicant.
*Bonus and retirement allowance are included in the annual salary.
Terms of Employment (1) Upon appointment, the successful candidate will receive relocation allowances in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws.
(2) Allowance for commuting expenses will be provided.
(3) Employee and JAMSTEC will share the premiums for social insurance and labor insurance in the proportion specified by current statute.
(4) JAMSTEC employee cooperative provides various subsidies for mutual aid and welfare services.
(5) Housing lease service will be available in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws.
(6) Holidays and vacations: Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, year-end, and New Year's holidays. Annual vacations with pay, special vacations, leave of absence to care for a family member, and maternity leave are provided.
