Available Position JAMSTEC is recruiting four positions as Project Researchers (II) or Postdoctoral Researchers. (AGM22-014)
Recruiting Department Research Center for Environmental Modeling and Application (CEMA), Research Institute for Global Change (RIGC)
Job Description The Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) has been commissioned by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) to conduct "the Advanced Research Program for Climate Change Prediction (FY2022 - FY2026). "This project aims to reduce uncertainty in future climate change predictions by improving climate simulation models, determine the mechanisms of climate change, improve the accuracy of climate predictions, and use the data in a comprehensive manner. The goal of this program is to create and provide scientific evidence to aid the development of mitigation and adaptation plans for global climate change.

We are recruiting four project researchers or postdoctoral researchers to participate in the program.

[Research Description]
To develop a global atmosphere-ocean coupled climate model (AOGCM) that incorporates ecosystems and biogeochemical processes (the carbon cycle, etc.), and an Earth System Model (ESM) . The components of these models will need to be developed before experiments can be conducted. Specifically, the successful candidates will engage in one or more of the activities listed below (1)-(4).
Because the main objective of the program is to achieve a comprehensive understanding of the global climate system, including the impact of human socio-economic activities, to make climate change predictions, multilateral research approaches are required. To contribute to activities (1)-(3), the candidates are expected to be able to use FORTRAN, various shell languages on UNIX/Linux systems, and visualization software to develop AOGCMs and ESMs, and operate them on the Earth Simulator (i.e., our supercomputer). For (4), programming of a General Algebraic Modeling System (GAMS) will be required (this task can be learned after accepting the position).

(1) Development of biogeochemical and ecosystem models for the atmosphere, ocean, or land, and implementation thereof in an ESM.
(2) Obtaining an understanding of the interactions among climate change, the carbon cycle, and human activity through ESM simulations.
(3) Prediction of seasonal and longer term (in the order of several years) climate and carbon cycle changes, and analysis of the causes of past climate and carbon cycle changes. This will require the development and operation of AOGCM, ESM, and initialization systems.
(4) Extension of the socioeconomic model to a coupled ESM-socio-economic model, and analysis of climate-economy interactions using these models.
