Available Position JAMSTEC is recruiting one position as a Postdoctoral Researcher. (AGP22-007)
Recruiting Department Environmental Geochemical Cycle Research Group, Earth Surface System Research Center (ESS), Research Institute for Global Change (RIGC)
Job Description The Environmental Geochemical Cycle Research Group, Earth Surface System Research Center (ESS), Research Institute for Global Change (RIGC) is soliciting applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher position focusing on a research project entitled, “Development of algorithms for retrieval and post-processing of NO2 and GHG data collected by GOSAT-GW using modeling and ground observation approaches” (FY2020- ; PI: Yugo Kanaya). The project is a subcontract from the National Institute for Environmental Research (NIES) and supported by the Ministry of the Environment, Japan.

[Research Description]
GOSAT-GW (Global Observing SATellite for Greenhouse gases an Water cycle) is the third-generation satellite of the GOSAT series to be launched during FY2023. We aim to monitor global large-scale emission sources of CO2 and methane, supported by the simultaneous measurements of NO2, as a marker pollutant from combustion sources. The responsibilities of the successful candidate will include (but are not limited to) conducting independent, innovative research studies that contribute to the broader goals of the project, such as conducting field observations to improve the reliability of satellite NO2 data retrieval and evaluating relationships between NO2 and CO2/methane. To this end, the candidate is able to use the relevant instruments (MAX-DOAS developed by JAMSTEC, Pandora from NASA, and other monitoring instruments), existing data, observational network, and the international collaborative framework of JAMSTEC.

The duties of the successful candidate are as follows:
1) Conduct observational studies from ground stations and/or research vessels to evaluate NO2 satellite observations and analyze relationships between NO2 and CO2/methane.
2) Perform data analysis to identify sources of bias in satellite observations and improve algorithms for their correction.
3) Foster international collaborations to develop a harmonized validation network with global coverage (TROPOMI and GEMS satellites, Pandonia network, etc.)
4) Prepare project outcome reports and peer-reviewed publications for submission to high-quality journals.

[Relevant Research Fields]
Atmospheric Chemistry, Remote Sensing, Optical Engineering, Environmental Science, Geochemical Cycles, Geophysics, Climate Science, Meteorology, and other related fields.

Job Type Postdoctoral Researcher: To contribute to the project, a Postdoctoral Researcher should be able to independently conduct the research subject which is authorized by the Project under direction of a leader, and to be appointed to improve his/her research qualities.
