Available Position JAMSTEC is recruiting one position as a Postdoctoral Researcher. (AGP22-011)
Recruiting Department Environmental Geochemical Cycle Research Group, Earth Surface System Research Center (ESS), Research Institute for Global Change (RIGC)
Job Description The Environmental Geochemical Cycle Research Group, Earth Surface System Research Center (ESS), Research Institute for Global Change (RIGC) is soliciting applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher position focusing on a research project entitled “Prompt Quantification of National SLCFs(*) Emissions from Combustion Sources in East Asia, and Its Methodological Development” and its sub-theme 1 "Prompt estimation of country-based emissions using field/satellite observations and data assimilation models" (FY2022-2024; Principal Investigator: Yugo Kanaya). The project is funded by the Ministry of Environment, Japan (Environment Research and Technology Development Fund (ERTDF) project No. 2-2201)
(*) SLCFs = short-lived climate forcers, i.e., air pollutants (primary and secondary) and methane affecting climate change
[Research Description]
In this position, the successful candidate will develop the means to estimate emission rates of black carbon (BC), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and/or carbon monoxide (CO) from combustion processes per Asian countries. The candidate’s research efforts will advance relevant scientific knowledge to support activities of the IPCC's new methdology developement about the SLCF (short-lived climate forcers) emission inventory and the reports from the Arctic Council.

Specific topics include one or more of the following:
1) Rapid estimation of emissions from Asian countries, by integrating aircraft observations (EMeRGe-Asia) and/or ground-based observations (those on Fukue Island) with numerical model simulations (CHASER, WRF/Chem etc).
2) Emission estimation and/or atmospheric chemistry process studies using new-generation satellite observations (TROPOMI, GEMS)
3) Relating the obtained scientific information to socioeconomic analysis of emission reductions.

To promote proactive research, the following data and tools will be available, along with the related support and advice:
German aircraft observation data over Asia/Pacific (EMeRGe-Asia), Long-term observation data at remote sites (incl. Fukue Island), TROPOMI and GEMS satellite data, bottom-up emission inventory data, Tropospheric chemistry reanalysis data derived from data assimilation, Regional/Global atmospheric chemistry model simulation data (WRF/Chem, CHASER) and the model systems etc.

[Relevant Research Fields]
Atmospheric Chemistry, Environmental Science, Geochemical Cycles, Remote Sensing, Civil Engineering, Geophysics, Climate Science, Meteorology, and other related fields
Job Type Postdoctoral Researcher: To contribute to the project, a Postdoctoral Researcher should be able to independently conduct the research subject which is authorized by the Project under direction of a leader, and to be appointed to improve his/her research qualities.
