Job Description The Physical and Chemical Oceanography Research Group in Global Ocean Observation Research Center (Director: Shuhei Masuda), Research Institute for Global Change (RIGC), Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) invites applications for a Researcher (Ⅱ) to participate in physical and/or chemical oceanography research projects at basin to global scales.

[Research Description]
Our group specializes in shipboard observations to describe and understand oceanic environments and/or develop ocean observation technologies. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to our understanding of the physical and chemical properties of Earth’s environmental systems through suitable approaches and observation data obtained using pre-existing or newly developed technologies.

The duties of the successful candidate will include the following:
1. Undertaking month-long, land-to-land research cruises to conduct multi-parameter high-accuracy observations. The typical schedule for these cruises is approximately once every 2 years.
2. Conducting innovative research in physical and/or chemical oceanography by analyzing and interpreting the collected observation data to describe and understand ocean systems and their variability.

We welcome those who show broad interest in new approaches and in advancing ocean sciences. The successful candidate will be required to propose scientifically meaningful themes as described in the above duties and conduct independent individual research using the most effective approaches available, including numerical simulation and interdisciplinary collaboration. Strong communication skills and the ability to work successfully as part of a team aboard a research cruise ship are also essential.

[Position]
Researcher (Ⅱ):
Researcher (Ⅱ) is expected independently to conduct research and technology development and to share results through scientific publications and achieve technology innovation.

*There may be a change in affiliation in the case of reorganization of the Agency.
*At the time of appointment, the Job Title (Science/Technology) will be determined in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws.
Requirements The applicant must have completed a Ph.D. in a closely related field of research or technology development.

Working Conditions & Contract Period (1) Number of positions:
1 position for a Researcher (Ⅱ)

Tenure-track fixed-term employee

Discretionary labor system

(4) Contract Period:
Period of employment is from April 1, 2022 to March 31, 2027

*Effective date of employment is negotiable. However, it might be changed due to the influence of COVID-19 expansion.
*One contract period is a maximum of five fiscal years. The contract period will not be renewed.
*In accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws, on reaching the age of 65 during an employed fiscal year, the contract period will expire at the end of the same fiscal year. This bylaw may change.
*Passing the examination after a certain period of employment, the successful candidate will be transitioned to the position of permanent employee starting from the next fiscal year. For details, please contact Human Resources Section.
Employment period ends at the end of the fiscal year in which they reach the age of 60.
Salary Annual salary (paid in 1/12 equal monthly payments)
e.g., JPY 6,000,000~7,000,000

*Salary will be competitive in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaw, based on the academic qualifications and demonstrated research skills of the applicant.
*Bonus and retirement allowance are included in the annual salary.
Terms of Employment (1) Upon appointment, the successful candidate will receive relocation allowances in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws.
(2) Allowance for commuting expenses will be provided.
(3) Employee and JAMSTEC will share the premiums for social insurance and labor insurance in the proportion specified by current statute.
(4) JAMSTEC employee cooperative provides various subsidies for mutual aid and welfare services.
(5) Housing lease service will be available in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws.
(6) Holidays and vacations: Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, year-end, and New Year's holidays. Annual vacations with pay, special vacations, leave of absence to care for a family member, and maternity leave are provided.

*Please list publications in refereed (peer-reviewed) journals separately from unrefereed publications.

*If you have not been awarded any, include “none” in the list.
e) Two (or fewer) representative publications in PDF formats.
f) Two letters of recommendation from two senior research scientists (1 letter from each). The person providing the recommendation should email to JAMSTEC directly with a signed letter as an attached file in PDF format. Please include “GOORC AKS21-021 and the applicant's name” in the subject line. Employee or Visiting Researcher of JAMSTEC will not be accepted as a writer of Letter of recommendation.
