Job Description The Ocean Data Synthesis Research Group, Global Ocean Observation Research Center (GOORC), Research Institute for Global Change (RIGC), is soliciting applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher position to work on a Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research project entitled, “Inverse estimation of ocean material exchange between the Pacific basin and surrounding coastal regions (FY2022~FY2026, PI: Shinya Kouketsu)”.

[Research Description]
In cooperation with the Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research project “Macrocoastal oceanography” (https://macrocoast.jp/), the successful candidate will contribute to the development of a data assimilation system, to model the mechanisms of seawater transport between coastal regions and open oceans, and analyze the reanalysis dataset produced by the assimilation system, as well as observation datasets, and simulations by Earth system models.
The successful candidate will lead data assimilation experiments to clarify the influence of coastal waters on open ocean environments and evaluate the roles of exchanges between coastal and open ocean waters in global-scale ocean carbon and nutrient cycles. The results will be presented at conferences and published in scientific journals.

Job Type Postdoctoral Researcher: To contribute to the projects, a Postdoctoral Researcher should be able to independently conduct the research subjects which are authorized by the Projects under direction of a leader, and to be appointed to improve their research qualities.

Requirements Applicants are required to have obtained or expect to obtain a Ph.D. in a related field by the effective date of employment. Applicants are required to commence employment no later than 5 years after the last day of the fiscal year in which they obtain their Ph.D. (i.e., only applicants who obtained their Ph.D. after April 2017 are eligible).

[Qualifications and Experience]
The successful candidate is expected to have expertise in physical oceanography and the ocean carbon cycle, as well as numerical simulations of ocean or climate systems.

The successful candidate is expected to have expertise in oceanography research and to be proficient in using FORTRAN, various shell languages in UNIX/Linux systems, and visualization software to develop and operate the data assimilation system using supercomputing systems such as the Earth Simulator.

Total period will be terminated on March 31, 2026 after two contract renewals.
*First contract period is from April 1, 2023 to March 31, 2024.
*Effective date of employment is negotiable.
*Contract period can be renewed depending on the performance and working attitude of the successful candidate.
*Contract period might change due to budget constraints of the projects.
*In accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws, on reaching the age of 65 during an employed fiscal year, the contract period will expire at the end of the same fiscal year. This bylaw may change. 
*This position is a non-tenure-track, fixed-term employee position.
        
Salary Annual salary (paid in 1/12 equal monthly payments)
JPY 4,400,000-5,250,000
*Salary will be competitive in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaw, based on the academic qualifications and demonstrated research skills of the candidate.
*There is no raise.
*Bonus and retirement allowance are included in the annual salary.
Terms of Employment (1) Upon appointment, the successful candidate will receive relocation allowances in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws.
(2) Allowance for commuting expenses will be provided.
(3) Employee and JAMSTEC will share the premiums for social insurance and labor insurance in the proportion specified by current statute.
(4) JAMSTEC employee cooperative provides various subsidies for mutual aid and welfare services.
(5) Housing lease service is not available.
(6) Holidays and vacations: Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, year-end, and New Year's holidays. Annual vacations with pay, special vacations, leave of absence to care for a family member, and maternity leave are provided.
